Tranmere R v Charlton Ath preview

An injury time Jackson-esque type free-kick from Oliver Muldoon was enough to see Charlton safely through to the quarter- finals of the FA Youth Cup on Thursday evening.

Spurs were backed by a sizeable and noisy travelling support and had chances. Next up for the young Addicks is a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. The game will take place on Wednesday 29 February, the evening after the Chesterfield game, so some fans may be tempted to stay over.

The victors at Old Trafford will face either Chelsea or Nottingham Forest in a two legged semi-final. The other half of the draw will be contested by Newcastle, Blackburn, Fulham and Burnley.

The senior side face Tranmere at Prenton Park on Saturday hoping to equal a club record twelve away wins in a season.

The major injury concern is skipper, Johnnie Jackson, and with Darel Russell available again after suspension, Jackson may not be risked. Scott Wagstaff, Bradley Pritchard and Danny Haynes are other options that Powell may consider.

Bradley Wright-Phillips’ goal drought goes on and he does appear to be short of confidence at the moment. Powell may persist with his leading scorer over the next couple of games, which may should give him some decent chances to get back on the score sheet.

Powell may field this starting line-up:

Hamer; Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins; Green, Stephens, Hollands, Russell; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Sullivan, Cort, Pritchard, Clarke, Haynes.

The referee will be Andy Haines from Tyne and Wear.

The Addicks have been grinding out results of recent times, rather than playing the free flowing football of earlier in the season. A win is a win and Powell will accept three points by any means.
